A non-governmental organization has submitted a request to the Election Commission of Pakistan to ban the use of plastic-made panaflex, banners and election symbols in the upcoming general elections, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Friday.
The NGO fears that thousands of tons of plastic will be used and discarded by the political candidates, causing air pollution and environmental damage.
The NGO also asked the Election Commission to implement its own notification that requires the use of disposable material for food and drink provision for the voters on February 8.
The NGO said it will also file an application in the government of Punjab and Islamabad High Court to seek legal action against the use of plastic in the election campaign.
The NGO urged the Election Commission to make a policy that prohibits the use of plastic and promotes environment friendly alternatives.
