Pakistan’s young right-arm pacer Khurram Shahzad, part of the Pakistani squad presently on tour to Australia, will not play remaining Tests of the three-match series because of fractured ribs, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.
Khurram was ruled out after pulling up sore following a heavy defeat in the first Test. The cricketer had complained of pain in his left rib during the first Test of the series played in Perth in which the visitors suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the hosts.
The 24-year-old impressed on his debut in Perth, finishing with match figures of 5-128, removing Steve Smith twice. But he complained of discomfort and scans showed a stress fracture in the ribs along with an abdominal muscle tear.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on the other hand, has said, “Fast bowler Khurram Shahzad complained of discomfort in his left side during the first Test in Perth.”
“Following his complaint, Khurram was sent for an MRI scan after the match.
“Further details will be shared in due course after the medical panel assesses the MRI reports.”
The Board has further said it will draw up the future plan after consultation with the specialist.
“The cricketer will return to Lahore and will be sent to the National Cricket Academy for rehabilitation,” said the PCB.
Pakistan already had a weakened bowling attack after speedster Naseem Shah was omitted from the tour due to a long-term injury.
Spinner Abrar Ahmed missed the Perth Test, which they lost by 360 runs, with leg discomfort, but could return for the second match in Melbourne that begins December 26.
Pakistan, who have not won a Test in Australia since 1995, have Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim in their squad as potential replacements for Shahzad.
