There is no respite for people of the country from extreme cold as temperatures are well below the average and the fog has made matters even worse, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Different sections of the motorway were closed for traffic after large swathes of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) were again blanketed by dense fog on Sunday morning.
On highways too as well as within cities, traffic moved at a snail’s pace.
M 1, from Islamabad to Peshawar, M 2, from Islamabad to Balksar, part of Hazara motorway, and M 14, from Hakla to Yark, had to be closed after fog reduced visibility considerably making it hard for motorists to drive.
Spokesman for the Motorway Police (MP), on the other hand, said that the purpose of closing motorways was to prevent accidents and protect people’s lives.
He advised people to first avoid travelling unnecessarily in fog, and if it was really necessary, travel during the daytime when fog is not dense and return to their destinations by evening. “Turn the fog lights of your vehicles on, drive at a slow speed, and keep your distance from other vehicles,” he counselled.
“Dial helpline no 130 in case of an emergency or to seek information. You can also receive updates by logging on to the website of the National Highways and Motorway Police,” the spokesman said.
Large parts of country in grip of severe cold
On the other hand, the weather is bitterly cold in large parts of the country, and Lahore is no exception.
Extremely cold winds have made the weather chillier.
Minimum temperature in the Punjab capital on Sunday morning was recorded at 6 degrees Celsius, which was expected to go up to 9 degrees Celsius later in the day.
The level of humidity in the air was recorded at 90 per cent, while breeze was blowing at the speed of 5 kilometers per hour.
The weather department, on the other hand, forecast dry weather for the city and other parts of Punjab.
Doctors have advised people to protect themselves from dry weather.
