Additional Attorney General (AAG) told the constitutional bench (CB) of the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday that the government had replaced Justice (r) Javed Iqbal with Justice (r) Faqeer Muhammad Khokhar as the missing persons commission head, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
During the hearing of the missing persons’ case, the AAG also told the CB that the government planned to form tribunals for these persons through legislation.
A six-member bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, heard the case.
Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar said that legislation would be required for the purpose.
“The cabinet’s committee is working on it,” the AAG informed.
Justice Mazhar asked how long it would take to legislate on the matter.
Justice Jamal Mandokhel said that the law on the subject already existed. “If somebody has committed a crime, he should be tried in a court,” the judge said, adding, “And if he is innocent, set him free.”
The additional attorney general said the government wanted to resolve the missing persons’ issue for good.
Justice Mandokhel, however, opined that if the government wanted to resolve the issue, all missing persons would have been recovered by now.
Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi asked how many people the commission had recovered so far.
Later the bench adjourned the case’s hearing for an indefinite time period.
