Heavy downpour pummels several Punjab cities triggering urban flooding

The recent powerful spell of monsoon brought heavy rain that pummeled several cities in Punjab including Lahore, causing inundation of low-lying areas, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Rain also lashed Narowal, Noshehra Virkan, Feroz Tawan, Kasur, Bahawalpur, Hasilpur, Chishtian, Ali Pur, Jehanian, Shehr Sultan, and Manchanabad.

The low-lying areas have completely submerged with a heavy downpour. In many areas, electricity feeders have also been tripped during rain and these areas have been without power since morning.

Torrential rain pounded Lahore and several city areas including Model Town, Ferozpur Road, Kot Lakhpat, and Thokar Niaz Baig were submerged.

A 160mm of rain was recorded in Lahore so far. Most of the rain, 163mm, was recorded in the Gulshan Ravi area. The rain has been lashing the city for the last five hours. The entire city is wearing a look of a big cesspool.

According to the Pakistan Metrological Department report, monsoon currents are continuously penetrating the country from the Bay of Bengal. A westerly trough is also affecting the upper parts of the country that may persist during the next few days.

Under the influence of this system, rain/wind-thundershower (with few heavy to very heavy falls) are expected in Kashmir, (Neelum valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur), Gilgit Baltistan (Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar), Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Kasur, Mianwali, Sargodha, Khushab, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Sahiwal, Bahawalnagar, Okara, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Kurram, Lakki Marwat, Kohat, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Karak and Waziristan from 22nd to 26th July with occasional gaps.

Rain/wind-thundershower (with isolated heavy falls) is also expected in Zhob, Sherani, Barkhan, Musakhel, Kohlu, Naseerabad, Jhal Magsi, Loralai, Ziarat, Mastung, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella, Awaran, Kech, Panjgur, Dera Ghazi khan, Rajanpur, Multan, Khanewal, Bhakkar, Layyah, Kot Addu, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, and Karachi from 22-24 July with occasional gaps.

The Met Office has warned that heavy rains may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore from 22-26 July and may trigger landslides in the vulnerable areas of Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan and hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the period.

Heavy rain may generate flash flooding in Kashmir, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Manshera, Abbottabad, Rawalpindi/Islamabad during 22-26 July, while in hill torrent of Dera Ghazi Khan and adjoining areas of northeast Balochistan on 22-23 July.

Heavy rains may trigger water logging in low-lying areas of Karachi and Hyderabad during 22-24 July.

Six dead in KP and Punjab

According to the PDMA, four people were killed and one person got injured due to heavy rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Twelve houses were partially damaged due to floods and rains across the province, the authority added.

Nine houses were partially damaged due to the natural disaster in Lower Chitral, it added.

The KP Relief Department, District Administration, PDMA, Rescue 1122, Civil Defense, and related institutions were on alert, a spokesman for Relief Department informed.

A detailed assessment of the damage would be shared as soon as the flood waters recede in Lower Chitral, he said, adding that affected people in Lower Chitral had already been shifted to safer places.

Food items (dry ration) were provided to the affected families, the official said.

The district administration has mobilized heavy machinery for the speedy restoration of the roads, he added.

In Lahore, a 17-year-old boy was drowned in water standing under Do Moria Bridge.

A man sustained injuries when the roof of his house collapsed in Raiwind.

The Lahore district commissioner has imposed Section 144 banning swimming in rain ponds, canal or river.

A 14-year-old boy in Khadian Khas area of Kasur died after drowning in rainwater.

On the other hand, several villages on Multan Road were inundated by floodwater when the protective bund on River Ravi broke down.
