The Sugar Advisory Board (SAB) is considering allowing sugar mills to export 2.5 lakh tonnes of sugar as demanded by the Pakistan Sugar Mill Association (PSMA), reported the 24NewsHD TV channel.
In this regard, a meeting of the SAB was held under the chair of the caretaker minister of commerce and industry Dr Gohar Ijaz in Islamabad on Tuesday.
According to sources, the government directed sugar mill owners to submit meticulously document their surplus sugar stocks at the forefront of the meeting's agenda.
In light of the domestic market's demand, the government had called upon sugar PSMA to focus on meeting local sugar consumption.
Contrary to the government's stance, the PSMA has articulated its desire to export a substantial quantity of sugar, amounting to 2.5 tonnes.
The association formally presented this demand, seeking official permission from the government to proceed with the exportation of the surplus sugar.
However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential repercussions of allowing sugar exports.
The fear is that such a move could lead to an increase in local sugar prices, impacting consumers negatively.
In response to the government’s concerns, the PSMA emphasized that there is currently an abundant supply of sugar in the country, with reserves deemed sufficient for the next two months.
