Nine people lost their eyesight after they were administered an injection at Ayub Medical Complex, Abbottabad, one of the top health facilities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.
This shocking example of negligence came as the medical director of the hospital, Dr Ahsan Aurangzeb, confirmed the news. A former member of the national football team, Afsar Hussain, was also among the affected persons.
According to Dr Ahsan, the injection was administered in the Ophthalmology Department, which has been sent to the laboratory for testing and analysis. Facts about the injection would be revealed only after the test result report is received.
These affected people losing their eyesight were outdoor patients, as a large number of citizens from not only Abbottabad but also from far-flung areas visit this health facility which is the largest in Hazara Division.
Meanwhile, police have neither registered any case nor taken any action after this tragic action so far.
One of the most important questions is that why the officials concerned, especially those running the Ophthalmology Department didn’t test this injection before administering to the patients and whether the same had been used previously as well or it was new. Certainly, the manufacturer, the supplier and the purchasing authority have to answer some serious questions.
