The government has finalised Anti Rape Investigations and Trial Bill for expeditious punishment of rapists through special courts, said Advisor to the Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior Barrister Mirza Shahzad Akbar in a tweet on Tuesday.

He said the main aim of the bill is to protect the rape victims besides maintaining a record of the rapists. The constitution of special courts, proposed in the bill, would help prompt trial and effective prosecution of the rape cases.

The decision had been taken in a session of the government’s legal team which was chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan where he was given a briefing over the legal procedures to pronounce penalties to the rapists and regulations for the protection of witnesses.

On the occasion, Imran Khan had said that the authorities will have to bring up a plan for curbing rape incidents and any delay in its legislation will be disastrous for the country.
