The martyrdom of the first Muslim woman prime minister Benazir Bhutto, is being commemorated.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) arranged special ceremonies to pay tribute to the Daughter of the East across the country.
Born on June 21, 1953, in Karachi, Benazir Bhutto went to Oxford University for studies and remained a student leader.
In 1977, she launched the struggle against the arrest of her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto braving the dictatorship of General Zia. Benazir went into exile after a long struggle for democracy.
The return of Benazir Bhutto in 1986 created history and she clinched victory in 1988 general elections. She was elected as the first Muslim woman prime minister.

She accomplished historic feats as prime minister but her government was toppled and she went to exile again. Benazir Bhutto ended her exile for the second time on October 18, 2007, and created history again.

Millions of her supporters and followers accorded her a warm welcome in Karachi.
Benazir Bhutto's convoy came under terrorist attack at Karsaz, claiming more than 250 lives of her supporters and party workers.
She continued her struggle and announced public rallies. She was returning from such a rally at Liaquat Bagh when she again another terrorist attack on December 27, martyring her.
To commemorate the 16th anniversary of the martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto, PPP arranged a special ceremony at Garhi Khuda Buksh. Millions of people flocked to Garhi Khuda Bax to pay her homage.
The day is dawning with special prayers across the country, followed by special ceremonies like vigils, seminars and conferences to shed light on her lifelong struggle.
