In view of a forecast for heavy monsoon showers in different parts of the country from Sunday to Wednesday, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday issued an alert for the provincial disaster management authorities as well as all concerned departments, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The NDMA said moist currents from the Arabian Sea would enter the upper parts of the country, which would result in torrential rains due to which deluge was feared in streams in the country’s mountainous areas.
It said that heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, predicted for upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Galyat, Murree and Azad Jammu and Kashmir during the aforementioned period, could not only result in streams bursting their banks but could also lead to landslides.
Similarly, streams and nullahs in Balochistan and adjoining districts of Punjab namely Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur could also be flooded, the Authority said, adding, “Flash floods could affect people’s mobility in these areas besides causing damage to different structures, crops and cattle.”
The NDMA directed the concerned departments to take appropriate measures for the protection of endangered communities.
It also advised the people living in the areas at risk to avoid crossing swollen rivers and streams and identify safe spots beforehand.
It also advised the people to avoid going near flyovers since they could collapse anytime during inclement weather.
