A court in Islamabad on Monday acquitted main accused in Sarah Inam murder case, Shahnawaz Amir, son of renowned journalist Ayaz Amir, in a case of illegally possessing Kalashnikov, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The court acquitted Shahnawaz Amir on benefit of doubt and expressed anger on the faulty investigation conducted by the police.
Judicial Magistrate Umar Shabbir released written judgement in the Kalashnikov recovery case.
The court also ordered to issue Robkar for the release of the accused in Kalashnikov recovery case.
The court verdict says that the prosecution failed to prove the case against the accused and there were many loopholes in the evidence presented in the case. “It’s an accused’s right to benefit from the doubt,” the verdict says.
The court observes that Constable Tariq who sent the complaint to the police station was produced in the court as witness. “Another loophole was not to present a private person as a witness,” the court says.
Meanwhile, the final arguments in the Sarah Inam murder case were continuing and a verdict will be pronounced after that.
The Islamabad Police had arrested Shahnazaz Amir on September 23 last year for allegedly killing his Canadian national wife at a farmhouse in the federal capital. Later, the police had recovered an illegal Kalashnikov from his possession and filed another case against him.
Last year in December, the court had indicted Amir and his mother Sameena Shah in the Sarah Inam murder case. The indictment order was issued by judge Atta Rabbani after he dismissed Sameena’s application seeking to be discharged from the case. Both the accused have pleaded not guilty to the crime.
Sarah Inam, 37, was a Canadian national and a successful economist who worked with Deloitte and USAID at different points of her career. She was married to Shahnawaz for just three months before being murdered.
She had a master's degree from the University of Waterloo and was currently employed in the government sector in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as per friends and family.
