Several candidates of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and their proposers and endorsers were arrested by the police in Murree while they were submitting their nomination papers for the upcoming elections, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Thursday.
The police did not spare even the lawyers who accompanied them and tried to intervene.
Among those arrested were former Member of Punjab Assembly Latasab Sati, whose proposer was taken away by the police before reaching the Returning Officer (RO), and independent candidate Shakeel Khaliq Dad Abbasi, who belonged to PTI.
Abbasi and his proposer and endorser were also arrested outside the RO office and were not given a chance to check the paper by the police.
The reason for the police action is not clear yet, but it has sparked outrage and condemnation from PTI and other political parties.
PTI has demanded the immediate release of its candidates and supporters and has called for a fair and transparent electoral process.
