The National Assembly has approved an amendment proposed by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to increase the salaries and allowances of parliamentarians on Friday.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, despite opposition from some quarters of the opposition benches in the House, the amendment passed with a majority vote, introducing several changes to the privileges of the parliamentarians.
As per the report, the travel allowance for members of the parliament has been increased from Rs10 per kilometre to Rs25 per kilometre. Additionally, unused annual air tickets for parliamentarians will no longer be cancelled but could also be used in the next year.
The amendment also transfers the authority to determine the salaries and allowances of parliament members from the federal government to the Finance Committee of the respective house.
The changes to the salaries and allowances were made through an amendment to the Members of Parliament Salaries and Allowances Act, included in the Finance Bill.
The amendment was presented by PPP's Abdul Qadir Patel.
