Chinese nuclear submarine sinks at shipyard during construction

A Chinese nuclear submarine, reportedly of the Xia class, sank while still under construction at a shipyard, 24NewsHD TV Channel reported on Sunday.

The channel reported that, according to US Department of Defence officials, satellite images capturing the incident have gone viral.

US defence officials have called the submarine's sinking a "tragedy" for China, emphasising the challenges Beijing faces in the waters of the South China Sea.

The Pentagon highlighted the need for China to strengthen its navy to tackle these growing maritime challenges.
