Although monsoon rains have become far less frequent in north-east Pakistan and adjoining areas of India from where four out of five major rivers flow, River Sutlej still continues to wreak havoc in some parts of Punjab, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.

Swollen river has washed away several embankments at Ahmadpur Sharqia (Ahmadpur East), consequently inundating dozens of villages and flooding crops sown over thousands of acres of land.

Several homes have also been destroyed by floods.

There are fears of the outbreak of contagious diseases in the affected areas.

Also on Sunday, spokesperson for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab had said that the flow of water in River Sutlej was normal, except for Islam Headworks, where the river was in low flood.

He said that inflow of water at Head Islam was 66,586 cusecs while the outflow 64,356 cusecs.

He further said that the flow of water at Ganda Singh Wala was 38,000 cusecs, while the inflow at Head Sulemanki was recorded at 40,000 cusecs. Similarly, the outflow was 26,000 cusecs of water.

He said that the flow of water was normal in all other rivers of Punjab.

Meanwhile, relief activities continued in flood-affected areas on Sunday as well.
