The Fatima Jinnah Medical University organised a special lecture on palliative medicine in Lahore, a press release said on Thursday. Noted expert Professor Dr Iain Lawrie graced the occasion as a guest speaker.


Vice Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Medical University Prof Dr Khalid Masood Gondal and the faculty welcomed the guest.


Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Kamran Khalid Khawaja, Registrar Professor Dr Muhammad Nadeem, Deans Professor Abdul Hameed, Professor Bilquis Shabbir, Professor Aliya Zahid, Head of Departments, Faculty Members, and several students attended the lecture.


Prof Dr Lawrie and Prof Gondal inaugurated the projection microscope facility in the Anatomy Department of the Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Lahore.


Prof Gondal thanked Prof. Lawrie for visiting Fatima Jinnah Medical University and said that Prof Lawrie's contributions to palliative medicine are commendable. Prof Lawrie is a consultant in palliative medicine at North Manchester General Hospital, UK.


Prof Gondal announced that for the first time in Pakistan, the post-graduate palliative medicine examination will be held and Prof Lawrie will be an external examiner.


He said the Fatima Jinnah Medical University is a prestigious institution in Pakistan where quality education is being provided to students.


In a few years, the varsity secured many awards and achievements, including the Best University Teacher Award, the Presidential Pride of Performance Award, and the Rehabilitation of Flood Victims in the Kashani Basti area of Rajanpur.


In his special lecture, Prof Lawrie said the palliative medicine is new in Pakistan. It has always been a human being who possesses professional competence, he said, adding that patients who suffer from any life-threatening disease and other physical, psychological, and spiritual problems could be relieved through their timely diagnosis and treatment. He suggested the launch of this important department in all universities.


Earlier, Prof Lawrie met the office-bearers and the council members of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) at the regional centre and discussed the cooperation in the field. Prof Laurie was also presented with an honorary souvenir.
