A surgeon involved in dozens of cases including illegal kidney transplants in Punjab has escaped from police custody at gunpoint, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday. 

Sources said that accused Fawad Mumtaz Khan was brought to Lahore by Lahore Police from Attock Jail a few days ago.

Allegedly, the accused Fawad Mumtaz escaped while being taken to the scene of the crime.

Allegedly, the police along with the accused Fawad Mumtaz reached the crime scene for a recovery in Lahore, but he managed to escape.

According to the report, the five police officers were held up by two armed persons and took the accused Fawad Mumtaz with them.

However, the case of the incident was registered in the police station Kahna under the complaint of the sub-inspector.

Sources in the police said that surgeon Fawad Mumtaz has transplanted the kidneys of many people including Chinese and Saudi citizens.

Fawad Mumtaz also transplanted late actor Umar Sharif's daughter, police sources said.

The accused has been operating an illegal kidney transplant network since 2006.
