Queen of Pop Nazia Hassan remembered

Fans and followers of music icon Nazia Hassan have marked her birth anniversary, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.
Known as the Queen of Pop, Nazia Hassan started her career as a child star at 10 and gained the fame through popular Pakistan Television programme Sung Sung.
She made her singing debut with the song, Aap Jaisa Koi, from the 1980 Bollywood film, Qurbani. Her debut album, Disco Deewane, released in 1981, charted in 14 countries worldwide and became the best-selling Asian pop record at the time.
Her English language single Dreamer Deewane made her the first Pakistani singer to make it to the British musical charts. Nazia Hassan was also a lawyer and a social activist.
A graduate of Richmond, The American International University, and the University of London, she received numerous national and international awards.
In 1980, Nazia Hassan became the first Pakistani singer to win the Filmfare a prominent Indian film award, at an age of 15 and remains the youngest recipient. She was also a recipient of the Pride of Performance.
She also worked as UNICEF cultural ambassador in 1991. Her last album, Camera Camera in 1992 was part of a campaign against drugs. On August 13, 2000, she died form cancer in London at the age of 35.
