A senior officer of Sindh police was thrown out of the force after being caught smuggling gutka (a type of betel quid and chewing tobacco made of crushed areca nut) and other drugs, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.


Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ahmed Karim Jilani was issued show-cause notice thrice and Sindh inspector general of police fired him from his post after the DSP failed to submit an appropriate response.


The inquiry report also recommended legal action against private driver Barkat Qureshi arrested along with the DSP.


The inquiry report stated that the suspended DSP was sent three written notices along with the charge-sheet but he had always replied that he was not feeling well, though he was not suffering from any illness.


DSP Jilani had been arrested while smuggling gutka and other drugs in a car by Customs officials in Jamshoro District on March 10 last. Sindh IGP Riffat Mukhtar also took notice and suspended the DSP and directed him to report to the Central Police Office.


The IGP also ordered an inquiry against the suspended DSP and appointed DIG Mirpurkhas Tanveer Alam Odho as the inquiry officer.


Recruitment of police officers faces delay


The process to recruit officers in Sindh police force on merit was facing has hit snags.


The process to appoint 35 DSPs who had passed the SPSC exams has been facing delay for the last two weeks.


The Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) had declared 35 candidates as successful but the Home Department’s Police Section-I was not any interest in this regard.


The Police Section-I was not taking any steps to ensure the completion of the process and if medical certificates and offer orders are not released on time the training of the recruits will not be set into motion on time.


The new Grade-17 DSPs will undergo training at Police Academy in Islamabad. They will be issued joining orders after completion of the training.
