Politician and activist Sharmila Faruqui has called for refraining from making judgments about women’s clothing choices following recent criticism of Hania Aamir and Yashma Gill’s attire at a wedding.
The debate began when veteran actor Hina Bayat made remarks about the actresses’ outfits.
“Let women live their lives the way they want to. Clothing is a personal choice, not a public debate,” she said on Instagram.
Advocating for women’s autonomy and respecting individual choices, she added that women should not be judged or shamed for their attire, particularly during events meant to celebrate joy and togetherness.
Social media users have been divided on the matter, with some siding with Hina Bayat’s perspective and others praising Sharmila’s progressive stance.
Many applauded Sharmila for addressing the broader issue of societal expectations and the undue scrutiny women often face regarding their appearances. “This constant policing of women’s clothing needs to stop,” one supporter commented.
Others highlighted that such discussions detract from the celebration of the occasion, shifting the focus to unnecessary criticism.
Sharmila urged everyone to focus on fostering acceptance and positivity rather than perpetuating divisive narratives. “Let’s celebrate diversity and individuality instead of tearing each other down,” she added.

Senior actress Hina Bayat raised objection to Hania Aamir and Yashma Gill’s controversial fashion options during the wedding ceremony of the latter’s sister.
