Jaranwala tragedy: LHC seeks reply over plea for setting up judicial commission

The Lahore High Court heard the plea for the forming a judicial commission to dig into the Jaranwala tragedy, 24NewsHD TV channel
The court issued a notice to the Punjab government and other authorities concerned to reply by September 11.
Justice Asim Hafeez took up the plea of Bishop Azad Marshall. The court directed the Assistant Advocate General to submit a report on the next hearing
The fundamental constitutional rights of minorities were challenged in the Jaranwala tragedy, the petition submitted, adding that the procedure adopted for the investigation is slow.
A judicial commission should be constituted to provide the victim with justice and adopt measures to avert such incidents in future, the court requested
The court will resume hearing on September 11.
A violent mob of hundreds ransacked and torched five churches, and attacked the residences of Christians and the office of the local assistant commissioner, following an alleged incident of blasphemy in Jaranwala town of Faisalabad district last month.
The district administration imposed section 144 for seven days, prohibiting all kinds of assembly, except for events organised by the government. The Punjab government has issued directions to form a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the incident, in line with orders issued by the caretaker prime minister.
