Poliovirus found in environmental sample in Hyderabad

Presence of poliovirus has been confirmed in the environmental sample in Hyderabad, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.


According to the Hyderabad health department, the virus was confirmed in the sample taken from Qasimabad pumping station.


The sample was taken from the said site on November 8 for confirmation of poliovirus.


District Health Officer Lala Jaffar said that after two and a half years, poliovirus was confirmed in the environmental samples in the city. Earlier, in July 2021, poliovirus was found in the sewage water, he added.


On Saturday, Pakistan reported its sixth polio case of 2023 after a nine-month-old child in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Orakzai district became the latest victim of the crippling disease.


The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the polio virus was found in a 9-month-old child in Orakzai district.


The Ministry of Health has also confirmed the poliovirus in 20 environmental samples from 12 districts of the country and said the presence of poliovirus in environmental samples is of great concern.


Yesterday, Pakistan received a support of US$100 million from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for the eradication of polio.
