Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI) chief Fazlur Rehman has said the government will pass new legislation against democracy, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.

"The coalition government is going to pass such a law that will gag the democracy,” he said while addressing a press conference in Islamabad.

He added: “The government wants to amend the anti-terrorism laws.

"Previously there were complaints against the NAB, now the defence establishment is being given powers that are not its purview.

"It is tantamount to civil martial law and a slap in the face of democracy.

"The new legislation is repugnant to the 26th constitutional amendment."

Fazlur Rehman said the JUI will hold its public gathering in Sukkur on November 28

He said a two-day meeting of the JUI Shura was held in Islamabad, which deliberated upon the 26th constitutional amendment.

He continued: “It expressed satisfaction at the constitutional amendment.

"It called uprooting the interest-based system and increasing the importance of the Federal Sharia Court a major achievement.

"Easing the registration of religious seminaries has been considered a good initiative."

The JUI chief condemned Israeli atrocities against Palestinians and urged the people of Pakistan to extend help to the Palestinians, saying: "Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza.

"Israel is not implementing the resolutions of the UN Security Council. The Pakistani people should come forward to help the oppressed Palestinians."

Fazl said the JUI Shura described the Israeli war crimes as human acts.

"It condemned the United Nations’s helplessness in implementing its resolution and putting an end to Israeli brutalities.

"After having kept silence on the Israel bloodshed, America and the West have no right to talk about human rights."
