Following continuous rains in catchment areas, the spillways of Simly Dam will be opened today at 11.30 PM to release additional water, reported 24NewsHD TV Channel Sunday.

According to Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon, the Spillway of Simly Dam is being opened as water not only has reached the highest level but also continues to increase. Presently, the water level has reached about the 2315-foot mark, he said, adding that the spillway is likely to remain open for the whole night as water continued to arrive from the hilly areas.

The Simly Dam is a major reservoir for the supply of water, while Rawalpindi receives water from Rawal Lake after filtration treatment. Simly Dam is operationally under the CDA while Rawal Dam is under the Punjab Small Dams Authority.

Irfan Nawaz Memon said that officials with life jackets and boats were ready under the supervision of the assistant commissioner to meet any flood-like situation in the populace areas. A high alert warning has been issued in the adjacent areas.

The Deputy Commissioner said that people should avoid going to the water courses. “The issuance of warning is essential as people might be visiting at the water courses,” he added.
