Hike in basic tariff: Nepra drops electricity bomb

Nepra has approved the government's request to increase the basic electricity tariff, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.


Domestic consumers using 200 units per month are exempted from the increase for 3 months.


For remaining domestic consumers, the basic electricity tariff will increase to Rs 7.12 per unit


Nepra has decided on uniform electricity tariffs for the entire country including Karachi.


For domestic consumers, the basic tariff per unit of electricity will be Rs.48.84.


The monthly tariff for the consumers using 300 units will be Rs.34.26 per unit, the price for 400 units will be Rs 39.15 per unit and the rate for consumers using 500 units will be Rs 41.36 per unit.


The monthly tariff of 600 units will be Rs 42.78 and 700 units will be Rs 43.92. Since the coalition government took over after the February gender election, people have been making many complaints about hikes in energy prices – especially electricity and fuel rates.


Also, Nepra approved the government's request to increase electricity tariff for commercial and agricultural consumers.


An increase of Rs 8.04 in basic electricity tariff for commercial consumers has been approved.


From July, the tariff per unit of commercial customers will go up to Rs 77.15


With an increase of Rs6.62 per unit in the basic tariff of agricultural consumers, the electric cost will go up to Rs46.83.


Opposition parties and civil society activists have also been raising their voices but relief is a far cry. The authorities claimed to have devised a compressive strategy to cope with the
