Meta-owned WhatsApp is currently working on a new feature to enable users to send video messages, WaBetaInfo reported.
The new update is part of the WhatsApp beta for the iOS 23.6.0.73 update. When this feature is released to some beta testers, they will be able to record short videos for up to 60 seconds for their contacts.
While the feature is still in the works, thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.7.0.77 update on the TestFlight, WhatsApp is working on a dedicated preview when receiving video messages:
As you can see in this screenshot, the preview “Video Message” will show up within the chat list in case you receive a video message. The same feature is also available for images, videos, GIFs, and stickers, and it was made compatible with reactions last year. Now that the preview correctly displays video messages within the chat list, we can say that this is a further step towards developing the feature. However, this does not imply that this feature will be released soon as there are many other steps to follow, such as making video messages compatible with other platforms.
The main distinction between a video and a video message is that a video message can only be recorded and sent in real-time. When a recipient receives a video message, they can immediately tell that it was recorded on the spot, making it more personal and timely, so this also confirms the authenticity of the video.
It is really important to note that video messages are end-to-end encrypted, meaning that only the recipients can view them – not even WhatsApp can access them. In addition, while video messages cannot be saved or forwarded, users can still record them using the screen recording feature, as the video is not sent through the view once mode.
The ability to send video messages is under development and it will be available in a future update of the app.
