Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has disclosed in the latest survey that 20 million Pakistanis used to drink alcohol in the country.
According to the 24News HD TV channel, this was said by Senator Mushtaq in the Senate's Standing Committee meeting held under the chairmanship of Senator Mohsin Dawar on Thursday.
Addressing the committee meeting, Senator Mushtaq raised the question about the sale of alcohol in the country and said as per the WSJ survey, alcoholic liquor worth billions of rupees is being consumed every night in Pakistan.
Responding to this, Senator Saifullah Abro said mostly people drink alcohol to mask their griefs and sorrows and under Article 37(h) of the Constitution of Pakistan, it could be consumed in the country.
What is Article 37(h):
The Article 37 of the Constitution of Pakistan addresses the matter of "Promotion of social justice and eradication of social evils".
And, section (h) of Article 37 of the Constitution declared that the State shall prevent the consumption of alcoholic liquor otherwise than for medicinal and, in the case of non-Muslims, religious purposes.
In the next section (i) of the same Article 37, the Constitution further said that decentralise the Government administration so as to facilitate expeditious disposal of its business to meet the convenience and requirements of the public.
