The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Lahore High Court to complete the Model Town tragedy case within three months.
Hearing the case, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmad, heading a three-judge bench, also directed the high court to form a new bench and conclude the trial in 90 days.
The apex court also dismissed the petition to suspend the new joint investigation team (JIT) looking into the 2014 Model Town incident in which 14 people were killed and over 100 wounded when police opened fire on Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers.
The Lahore High Court on March 22, 2019, had dissolved the joint investigation team (JIT) set up to launch a fresh probe into the 2014 Model Town tragedy. The new JIT was formed on January 3 as per the notification of the Punjab chief secretary.
The LHC ordered the new JIT to stop the probe and annulled the notification of its constitution. It has sought a reply from the Punjab government regarding the new JIT.
