Dozens of villages flooded as Sutlej, Chenab burst their banks

Rivers Sutlej and Chenab have burst their banks, flooding dozens of villages in several cities and damaging standing crops, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.

After massive discharge of water in Sutlej by India, dozens of villages were inundated in Ganda Singhwala near Lahore. These villages included Bhakkiwala, Mastayki, Fatehwali, Mahiwala and Chanda Singh.

Floodwater also entered a number of villages in Kasur and Okara as the water level is rising in Head Sulemanki.

As many as 48,000 people residing in 40 villages along swollen Chenab River in Jhang were also affected as crops and roads were overwhelmed by the floodwater.

A medium flood in Sutlen River at Pakpattan prompted authorities to evacuate people living along the river.

There is extremely high flood in River Sutlej at Arifwala as the water level continued to rise. The situation has prompted the authorities to evacuate the people from nearby localities.

On the other hand, people living in the river’s vicinity have appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to raise the issue of release of water by India at the United Nations so that millions of rupees loss that the country has to suffer every year could be averted.   

River Sutlej wass in medium flood at Ganda Singhwala. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), water inflow as well as the outflow in the river at this place stand at 11,4260. 

The PDMA, however, has warned of high flood in the river in the next few days.

Similarly, the Authority informed, there was low flood at Head Sulemanki. Both water inflow as well as the outflow at the place stand at 62,118.

PDMA DG Imran Qureshi has said that all resources are being utilized to save human lives and efforts are being made to evacuate the people living in the vicinity of the river.

The DG has further said that all departments are together participating in relief and rescue operations.
