Mandate expires for Israel s Gantz to form government

The four-week mandate given to Israeli parliament speaker Benny Gantz to form a government expired on Tuesday, but talks continued on an emergency alliance with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. 

President Reuven Rivlin had announced that the mandate he gave to Gantz following an inconclusive election last month would run out at midnight if the ex-military chief proved unable to forge a deal.
