Law minister says bill aims at empower judiciary; National Assembly also passes Criminal Code Amendment Bill, NAB Amendment Bill

The National Assembly has approved the Supreme Court Review of Judgments and Orders Bill 2023.

PML-N’s Shaza Fatima presented the bill. Mohsin Leghari stressed this should be referred to the committee.

 “We are going to interfere in Supreme Court affairs, Mohsin Leghari said, adding that there is not even time to read the bill and the committee should be given time to review it.

However, Law Minister Azam Tarar said that legislation is the prerogative of the parliament that has never interfered in the affairs of other institutions. 

 “The interference is being done by them and not by us. The approval of this bill will facilitate the people,” he added.

He said the bill is aimed at facilitating the litigants and also empowering the judiciary. The legislation does not infringe upon the independence of the judiciary, the minister maintains.

The National Assembly also passed Criminal Code Amendment Bill 2023, NAB Amendment Bill 2023. Nazir Tarar presented the bills in the lower house of the parliament.

The assembly that met with Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf in the chair also approved a motion to defer to questions during the regular agenda proceedings. Murtaza Javed Abbasi presented the motion.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of Opposition Raja Riaz were also present. A committee report on a bill related to empowering NAB chairman too tabled

As per the draft under Article 184, a bench larger than the bench which decides on revision petitions against judgments and orders should be constituted.

A review can be sought within two months of the issuance of the decision or order, the bill states. The Lower House of the Parliament also adopted another resolution against the Supreme Court’s presented in the National Assembly. People's Party member Ali Musa Gilani presented the resolution against the Supreme Court

The National Assembly session is adjourned till Monday.
