Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has revealed that former ISI director general Lt-General Faiz Hameed aspired to become army chief and even sought an apology from PML-N President Nawaz Sharif in pursuit of his goal, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Thursday.
In an interview with a private TV channel, Khawaja mentioned that as General Qamar Javed Bajwa's retirement as army chief approached, Faiz Hameed continued his efforts to become the army chief until the very last moment.
The minister Asif also disclosed that the events of vandalism on May 9 also pointed towards Faiz Hameed's involvement, though he was not acting alone. He further claimed that Faiz Hameed provided logistical support, set targets, and offered strategic advice for the events that took place on May 9.
Khawaja Asif added that Faiz Hameed sought forgiveness from Nawaz Sharif and reached out to members within their ranks to support his candidacy for the position of army chief.
He also alleged that General Qamar Javed Bajwa wanted either an extension for himself or the appointment of Lt-General Faiz Hameed as army chief, specifically excluding General Asim Munir from the role.
