A sudden power outage plunged Jinnah International Airport into darkness Thursday, disrupting flight operations and causing inconvenience to passengers, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
According to sources, the power failure occurred due to a technical fault in the supply line of Karachi Electric (KE).
The outage affected the airport's lighting, air-conditioning, conveyor belts and immigration counters. Passengers from home and abroad were stranded in the waiting area, while their luggage could not be transferred from the planes either. Some passengers said that there were also patients on the flight from Lahore who needed urgent medical attention.
The airport administration did not give any satisfactory response to the passengers, who complained about the lack of communication and coordination. Long queues of passengers formed at the immigration counters, where manual processing was being done.
Sources said that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) was trying to restore the power supply with the help of generators. However, it was not clear when the normal flight operations would resume. The power outage also affected the nearby areas of the airport, where residents faced load-shedding for several hours.
