The Punjab government has approved to pay a monthly salary of Rs1.2 million to Justice (r) Azmat Saeed Sheikh, reported 24NewsHD TV on Monday.

Former Supreme Court Justice Azmat Sheikh has been appointed chairman of the Punjab Commission for Illegal Housing Society. His annual salary would be Rs10.44 million.

The Punjab Finance Department raised objection to the salary and benefits being given to Justice (r) Azmat but the provincial government while setting aside these objections fixed Rs1.2 million monthly salary of the retired judge.

It is pertinent to mention here that Justice (rtd) Azmat was the judge behind the investigation of the alleged corruption cases against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The government appointed him as head of the Broadsheet inquiry committee. The move was opposed by the PML-N and PPP. Both cited his past affiliation with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) believing it would create a ‘conflict of interest’.
