The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday adjourned the hearing of the case related to Punjab elections and the Review and Judgment Act till the following day, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

A three-member SC bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, heard the case.

During the hearing, the CJP remarked that expanding judicial jurisdiction was not wrong.

“We admit that the rules change over time, but it is not correct to grant the right to appeal in review through law without a constitutional amendment. The court matters are disturbed in this way,” he added.

Justice Muneeb Akhtar said, “I find it difficult to understand how the review against judgments in 184(3) is distinguished from other judgments. For me, the standard of review against all decisions of the Supreme Court is the same.”

The CJP said that even if the review rules were to be changed, there should have been a constitutional amendment.

“If the government wants to widen the jurisdiction of appeal against decisions of suo motu notice, it is most welcomed. But the right of appeal can be given through a constitutional amendment,” he added.

“This is a hasty legislation by the government, and we do not agree with this approach of the government,” he remarked.
