‘May Ri’ controversy provokes wise debates with director putting up stout defence

Pakistani TV drama ‘May Ri’ has been severely criticized due to its latest controversial episodes glorifying child marriages in some ways particularly with its latest development of Annie, a vibrant 15-year-old schoolgirl learning of her pregnancy.

In case the readers are not aware, drama serial ‘May Ri’ which is making headlines nowadays has been written by accomplished writer Sana Fahad and directed by senior director Meesum Naqvi while it has been brilliantly depicted by very young but super talented Pakistani actors Aina Asif and Samar Abbas who are now known as Annie and Fakhir.

The plot of drama serial revolves around the devastating consequences and difficulties of child marriages which are still practicing during the society.

While the latest few episodes of drama serial featuring Annie and Fakhar, actual victims of Child marriage into the drama, with unbearable burdens attempting to manage their lives in same ways.

However, in the latest unfolding event, the drama director Meesum Naqvi has been seen in a circulating video defending the criticism of drama serial during his latest appearance in some interview.

Here are the exact words offered by director during the interview: “The 2300 comments out of those 2 million who are watching drama, are saying this, then I do not call this glorification. These are those comments by those who say, ‘We only watch Annie and Fakhir’s scenes.’ Now, you need to understand those who are watching those scenes are not watching a different story. This is the kind of home where everyone has been married at a young age and is continuously saying this. So, whichever character has been wed early, all those characters are dysfunctional they all have a trauma. Annie and Fakhir both are victims. So, if now they are consoling each other, I’m not glorifying child marriage.”
