Former interior minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had been objecting to the census out of fear of losing seats.
During an interview with a private news channel, the former interior minister stated that a delay in conducting general elections beyond 90 days would not make any difference.
He said that the Council of Common Interests (CCI), in which PPP leaders were also present, had approved the new census with consensus.
“There is a consensus of the entire nation on this census. New delimitation is a constitutional requirement,” Sanaullah said.
On the other hand, former federal minister Sherry Rehman said that an agreement had been reached in the CCI meeting that the existing constituencies would not be changed.
She further said that the election commission’s announcement of taking four months for delimitations was a cause for concern and disappointment.
“The election commission should seriously reconsider its decision,” she demanded.
Moreover, Senator Waqar Mehdi and Senator Palwasha Khan said that general elections within 90 days were a constitutional requirement.
