Federal cabinet Thursday approved former Intelligence Bureau Director Genera Aftab Sultan as new chairman of the National Accountability Bureau, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Citing the sources, the news channel reported that name of Aftab Sultan was nominated for the NAB chief slot by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after consultation with coalition partners and opposition leader in National Assembly Raja Riaz.
Sultan, who had retired from police department in grade-22, had served as the intelligence bureau (IB) director general (DG) during the tenures of both PML-N and PPP.
Sultan will replace Justice (r) Javed Iqbal as the chairman of anti-corruption watchdog, who had assumed the office on October 11 , 2017.
The former NAB chairman’s term in office, however, was marred by allegations of political victimization by the then opposition parties, which are now part of the coalition government.
The opposition leaders then would frequently target Justice (r) Javed, accusing him of ‘political engineering’ to ensure PTI’s stay in power.
