Pakistani Ambassador to Iran, Mohammad Mudassar Tipu, emphasized the potential for robust trade relations between Pakistan and Iran during a conversation with the business community. He highlighted the prospects of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and innovative trade solutions despite existing obstacles.
"An FTA with Iran can cover many areas, allowing us to advance in various fields," said Tipu. He noted that trade could also be conducted through unconventional means where necessary, citing the successful trade between the Quetta Chamber and Iran as an example. Tipu also announced plans to export $100 million worth of Pakistani mangoes to Iran this season by improving logistical arrangements.
The ambassador provided updates on the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, acknowledging the resource-intensive nature of the project and the accompanying challenges. However, he expressed optimism about the ongoing efforts and the potential benefits of a free trade agreement.
"Reducing tariffs and duties is crucial," Tipu stressed, adding that the establishment of a 24-hour open border for trade and improved barter trade methods are being prioritized to facilitate smoother transactions.
Dr. Reza Amiri, the Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, also addressed the Federation Chamber of Commerce, echoing the sentiments of cooperation. "There is immense potential for trade between the two countries," he said, emphasizing the need to address banking bottlenecks to promote bilateral relations. He highlighted the recent visit of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the commitment to increase trade volume to $10 billion through signed memorandums of understanding.
The Iranian ambassador underscored the shift from a security model to an economic model in bilateral relations, mentioning the establishment of a free trade zone at Chabahar port, capable of handling four ships of 45,000 tons simultaneously.
Both ambassadors reaffirmed their countries' leadership commitment to fostering stronger economic ties and exploring new avenues for collaboration.
