Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has emphasized the need for short-term, medium-term, and long-term frameworks to effectively address the adverse effects of climate change on Pakistan, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel.
He was addressing the second session of the Pakistan Climate Change Council, held in Islamabad on Monday.
The session focused on critical strategies to tackle the pressing issue of climate change.
The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of climate change as a national health issue for progressive countries like Pakistan.
The Prime Minister highlighted the devastating consequences, such as last year's floods affecting a quarter of Pakistan's population, directly attributed to the results of climate change.
Kakar pointed out that the countries most affected by climate change are invariably those on the path to progress.
He emphasized the need for global initiatives to mitigate the risks posed by climate change to developing nations.
Recognizing the importance of collaboration, the PM commended Pakistani activists in the field of climate change for their commendable efforts to address the impacts of climate change in the country.
The session also acknowledged the potential for cooperation between federal and provincial authorities to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. The government is actively preparing for the upcoming COP-28 conference in the United Arab Emirates, where Pakistan will present its case, agenda, and action plan related to climate change challenges and solutions.
Following consultations with provincial governments, a delegation of climate change experts will represent Pakistan at COP-28.
