The reason why the Center is reluctant to allow the import of 100,0000 metric tonnes of wheat on the Punjab government’s demand is the heavy cost that the government will have to pay for that, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.

Sources told 24News that the Punjab government had estimated that the wheat import would cost Rs1.27 trillion, to which the federal government was strongly opposed; resultantly the two governments had locked horns over that.

Or in other words, the import of each maund of wheat would cost Rs5,098 since transport, markup and other expenditures were also included in it, they explained.

Sources further said that the provincial government already had to repay the loan of Rs600 billion under the head of wheat.
