A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan challenging the recent amendment to the Election Act, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Thursday.

The petition was submitted on behalf of six members of the Pakistan Bar Council, requesting the annulment of the amendment.

The petition argues that the amendment is inconsistent with various provisions of the Constitution of Pakistan and seeks to nullify a recent Supreme Court decision.

It contends that the amendment poses a threat to the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, and the distribution of powers within the government.

The petition further claims that the amendment is discriminatory, particularly against independent candidates, and violates Article 17 of the Constitution. It also suggests that the amendment specifically targets a particular political party.

In addition to seeking the annulment of the amendment, the petition requests the Supreme Court to order the federal government and the Election Commission to halt its implementation.

The Election Commission, the Ministry of Law, and the Federal Government have been named as respondents in the petition.
