The International Cricket Council (ICC) Friday announced the Women’s ODI Team of the Year 2024, celebrating the exceptional performances of top cricketers from around the globe. However, Pakistan’s absence in the lineup highlights the team’s struggles in the format during the past year.

Led by South Africa’s dynamic batter and captain Laura Wolvaardt, the team features three players from England, two each from India, South Africa, and Australia, and one each from Sri Lanka and the West Indies.

The batting lineup includes India’s prolific opener Smriti Mandhana, Sri Lanka’s run-machine Chamari Athapaththu, and the West Indies’ hard-hitting all-rounder Hayley Matthews.

Each of these players dazzled on the international stage, providing consistent and match-winning performances for their teams.

Wolvaardt herself delivered stellar performances, leading from the front with her remarkable batting and strategic acumen. Her leadership and ability to anchor innings made her an obvious choice as captain of the team.

The squad’s balance is further enhanced by versatile all-rounders like South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp, Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner, and Annabel Sutherland, who proved their worth with both bat and ball throughout the year.

India’s Deepti Sharma, known for her reliability in crucial moments, also earned a well-deserved spot for her consistent contributions as an all-rounder.

England’s bowlers made a strong impact, with left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone and pacer Kate Cross earning places in the squad for their ability to dismantle opposing batting lineups.

Additionally, England’s wicketkeeper Amy Jones secured her spot due to her dependable performances behind the stumps and her valuable contributions with the bat.

While the lineup celebrates the best performers in women’s ODI cricket, no Pakistani player made the cut this year, underscoring a disappointing year for the national team in the format.
