Out of more than 1,300 global proposals, Dr. Maryam’s project was selected to receive a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project also received an award for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in catalysing equitable grand challenges.
Dr. Maryam and her team will develop a voice-activated mobile phone to enable maternal health care workers in Pakistan to create and monitor detailed electronic medical records. The phone, named “Voice Health,” will record audio responses in different languages after specific prompts.
It will include an interface speech recognition module and a text recognition module. The system will convert the responses into text and generate a template electronic medical record in Urdu.
The technology will be tested at Lahore’s Shalamar Hospital, where maternity care workers will use it to collect records from 500 patients. The primary motivation behind Dr. Maryam’s research proposal is to improve maternal health outcomes in Pakistan. This technology will aid medical staff and doctors in providing accurate diagnoses and proper care to patients.
Dr. Maryam Mustafa’s project represents a significant step towards improving maternal health care in Pakistan.
By leveraging technology, the project aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of health care delivery, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for mothers in Pakistan.
