International seminar on the importance of women in medicine was held at Fatima Jinnah Medical University in Lahore the other day.


Renowned international cardiologist/past president of the Royal College of Physicians, London, Dr Sarah Clarke, with Dr Sebastian Alexander graced the occasion as chief guest.


Vice Chancellor Fatima Jinnah Medical University Prof Dr Khalid Masood Gondal welcomed the distinguished guests along with the faculty.


Dr Asad Rahim, Regional Director, CPSP Regional Centre Birmingham, UK; Prof Samina Ghaznavi, Professor of Medicine and Rheumatology, Former President Society of Rheumatology; Dr. Asma Ahmed, Consultant Endocrinologist, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi; Dr Aftab Chaudhry and Dr Javed Kiyani attended as guests of honour.


The ceremony began with the recitation of Holy Quran verses and the national anthem.


In the welcome address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal welcomed the distinguished guests. He delivered a brief presentation and highlighted the achievements of Fatima Jinnah Medical University in recent years, including Prof. Kamran Khalid Khawaja receiving the Best University Teacher Award from the Higher Education Commission, the unparalleled service of the Fatima Jinnah Alumni Association in flood-affected areas, a prominent position in the university ranking, and the establishment of the Telemedicine Department during the Corona pandemic, and the Director of the Quality Enhancement Cell Prof. Dr. Bilquis Shabbir being awarded the Presidential Medal for Excellence. He said that the credit for such successes of Fatima Jinnah Medical University goes to the FJMU faculty and students.


Dr Sarah Clark thanked Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal and Dr. Asad Rahim for inviting her. She gave a detailed lecture on the importance of women in the field of medicine. She said that you can do whatever you want, so improve your creative intelligence and build your professional relationships. Also, increase your self-confidence and self-esteem. She further said to always beware of the influence of social media and do not let it affect you.


Dr Asma Ahmed delivered a comprehensive lecture on "Importance of Women in the Department of Medicine in Pakistan, Navigating Challenges and Seizing Opportunities."


Dr Asad Rahim presented a male perspective on women in the field of medicine.


Dr Sebastian Alexander gave a lecture on women's health care in the UK.


Prof Bilquis Shabbir delivered a comprehensive talk on Beyond white coat; Unmasking physician burn out’ .


Prof Samina Ghaznavi gave a detailed talk on the rights of women in the workplace from an Islamic perspective.


A question and answer session was also held on the occasion.


On this occasion, Principal Prof. Dr. Abdul Hameed, Registrar Prof. Muhammad Nadeem, Deans Prof. Ayesha Malik, Prof. Bilquis Shabbir, Prof. Aliya Zahid, Prof. Naveed Akbar Hotiana, Prof. Shamila Ejaz Munir, heads of all departments, faculty members, and a large number of postgraduate and undergraduate students participated.


At the end of the seminar, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal presented the honorary shield and University History Book to Prof. Dr Sarah Clarke, International Cardiologist/President Royal College of Physicians, London, as a token of appreciation.
