Announcing 25 per cent increase in the amounts disbursed under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Foreign Minister (FM) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Saturday said the programme had the potential to eliminate poverty from the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Speaking at a function in Karachi, Bilawal, who is also the PPP chairman, said that those who were initially critical of this programme, now sang its praises. “The programme can be quite useful in today’s poverty and joblessness,” he added.
He further said that when his mother late Benazir Bhutto had returned to Pakistan in 2007, she was working on finding solutions to the country’s problems. “She was fighting against extremism and terrorism,” he said, adding, “My mother laid down her life for democracy.”
He said that PPP fought for the rights of all provinces and all segments of the society.
Talking about the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), he said it was the most transparent programme. “Former president Asif Zardari strove hard for launching the programme, which is aimed at empowering the women,” the FM said, adding, “Zardari even had to fight against the system for the BISP.”
