The Ghotki Police on Friday claimed to have foiled an attempt to marry off an underage girl to an elderly person in Dault Chachar area of Jarwar, a city of the district. The police registered a case against the groom identified as Fahad Chachar, two witnesses and the Nikkah Registrar.

According to Jarwar Police, Bachal, mother of the girl, complained to the police that her husband was forcibly marrying off her 13-year-old daughter Faiza Chachar to an elderly person. Acting swiftly, the police carried out a raid and recovered the girl. The police, later, produced the girl in the court of First Civil Judge who released her with the mother.

The police also cited the girl’s mother as saying that her husband also tortured her for stopping the marriage of her daughter.

The police registered a case against the girl’s father, groom Fahad Chachar, witnesses – Aftab and Saeed and Nikkah Registrar Molvi Samad.

Underage marriages and cases of Vani are rampant in different areas of the country, especially in the interior of Sindh and Punjab provinces. Although legislation has been made to check the menace, such incidents are often reported, mainly due to illiteracy and poverty.

The organisations working for child rights, especially against Vani and underage marriages, have vehemently demanded the government take effective measures to eliminate the scourge from society.
