An artificial intelligence (AI) system has been activated to enforce 19 traffic violations, issuing e-challans to offenders in Lahore, the 24NewsHDTV channel reported on Sunday.

According to the report, the Lahore Traffic Police have formed special teams to apprehend defaulter vehicles as part of an ongoing crackdown in the city.

The violations include signal jumping, lane and line violations, not wearing seat belts and helmet violations. Yesterday, a total of 12,948 e-challans were issued for various traffic violations.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Amara Athar stated that cameras are being used to monitor and surveil traffic wardens, ensuring disciplined traffic and safe travel through technology.

She said that for the first time in South Asia, an AI system is being used to issue e-challans for a comprehensive list of 19 traffic violations.

This includes offenses such as traffic signal violations, lane line infractions, not wearing seat belts or helmets, emitting smoke from vehicles, overspeeding, wrong-way driving, and illegal turns. The use of the AI system, in collaboration with the Safe City and Traffic Police, aims to make traffic enforcement more effective.

The CTO further detailed that 3,874 e-challans were issued for riding without a helmet, 4,041 for lane line and stop line violations, 3 for signal violations, and 245 for wrong-way driving.

CTO Amara Athar emphasised that to maintain an efficient and integrated traffic system, traffic wardens are being monitored and surveilled using Safe City cameras.
