The Domeli Dam in Jhelum has broken due to continuous heavy rainfall, which the structure could no longer withstand.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, there is a significant risk of flooding in the nearby populated areas.
The TV channel has obtained footage of the dam breaking, showing water gushing out from the damaged structure.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as efforts are underway to mitigate potential damage to the surrounding communities of Domeli, Bagwala, Jhang, Chanjlot, and Dhok Kalial.
Domeli Dam is located in Sohawa Tehsil of District Jhelum. It was completed in 2008 with a dead storage level of 1,153 feet and a top of the dam of 1,194 feet. The top width of the dam is 30 feet, the height 120 feet, and the length 1100 feet.
According to the International Commission on Large Dams, total dams and reservoirs in Pakistan over the height of 15 m (49 ft) are 150. Tarbela Dam is the largest earth filled dam in the world and is second largest by the structural volume.
Mirani Dam is the largest dam in the world in terms of volume for flood protection with a floodstock of 588,690 cubic hectometer, while Sabakzai Dam is the 7th largest with a floodstock of 23,638 cubic hectometer.
Two labourers swept away in surging floodwater near Dadu
After flooding in Gaj River due to overnight rains, two laborers working at Gaj Dam got swept away while crossing the river near Dadu, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.
According to police, one was rescued alive while search for the other is on.
