Country facing long power cuts as shortfall reaches 6,690MW

The country is facing extreme electricity shortfall as the deficit is reported to have increased to 6,690MW triggering power cuts as long as 12 hours a day in several areas of the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.
Sources in power division have divulged that the country is facing a power shortfall of 6,690MW. The total production of electricity across the country stands at 19,310MW while its demand is 26,000MW.
The country is producing 4,855MW electricity through hydro sources; 1,205MW through government thermal plants; 9,323MW being produced from the private power plants; 1,398MW electricity is being generated by wind power plants; 164MW electricity is coming from bagasse-run power plants; and 2,254MW electricity is being added to the nation grid from the nuclear source.
Sources in power division further reveal that the power distribution companies are observing 12-hour long power cuts in several parts of the country to manage 6,690MW shortfall.
They say that the duration of longshedding in the high losses areas was longer than other areas where losses are moderate.
